US Group Picks Nigerian Students for Training

A non-governmental organisation from lowa in the United States of America (USA), IRIS, has begun the selection of another batch of secondary school students from the north for a one year training programme in that country.

A total of 16 students from Kaduna and Sokoto states are expected to participate in the programme.

Speaking at an interactive session with reporters in Kaduna yesterday, the coordinator from IRIS, Mr. Robert Anderson, explained that the programme, funded by the United States government, was conceived to enable participants have first-hand knowledge of the American life.

Anderson spoke at a ceremony to welcome the first batch of students who left Nigeria about a year ago for the programme.

According to him, after the September 11 terrorist attack in parts of the U.S, the government decided to have a closer interaction with countries with high Muslim population.

"The programme was not conceived for participants to change their religions" Ander-son said, adding that "the students will stay near one of the four lowa cities having an Islamic center-Des Moins, Ames, lowa city and Cedar Rapids. IRIS will arrange for students to attend Mosques or Churches of their choice.
